For this month’s Boise Landscape Network spotlight, we connected with Eric Pierce of SYNLawn Boise to talk synthetic lawns. We wanted to know what people often get wrong and why more Treasure Valley homeowners are starting to see turf as a smart investment.

“It is landscape construction.”
When asked what he wishes more people knew, Eric doesn’t hesitate:
“It is landscape construction. Not just laying down some carpet, and it
pays off in a few years.”
That perspective changes how you think about turf. It’s not a quick fix. It’s a full landscape project that requires proper prep, drainage, and installation. Done right, it lasts for years.
There’s also a sustainability angle that surprises a lot of people:
“Most turf will be recycled within 20 years. If you install some now, it won't be going into the landfill. Facilities already exist that are turning old turf into new turf and ‘green’ composite boards.”

Clearing Up the Misconceptions
Eric says a few myths pop up over and over. The first one has to do with safety:
“Some people say synthetic turf is not safe for the environment, full of PFA's etc. Not true. Sod lawns with fertilizer have PFA's, there are none with artificial turf.”
The second misconception? Looks.
“If someone is unfamiliar, they think it all looks the same. If you see some fake green-looking turf, it likely came from China or Vietnam and is extremely cheap and low quality. The technology has come a long way and there is turf that looks so real you can't tell it's not.”
In other words, today’s turf isn’t the shiny, plastic grass you might remember from decades ago.

The Questions Homeowners Always Ask
When people in Boise start exploring turf, Eric hears the same two questions every time:
On pets:
“Is it ok for my pets to pee and poop on? Yes, it’s actually easier to clean up than real grass! Just wash it down with a hose.”
On odor:
“What about urine smell? Typically, this is not an issue due to new anti-microbial infill. But if there is odor, we have a special disinfectant designed specifically for artificial grass that eliminates the odor if needed.”
For pet owners especially, those answers are often the turning point.
Why Turf Works in Boise
So why does synthetic turf make sense here in the Treasure Valley? Eric says it comes down to durability:
“It’s very resilient to warm and cold conditions, and it bounces right back after a snowy winter. Putting greens are strong and withstand the freeze/thaw of Idaho winters. It looks great all year long, requires little maintenance, no fertilizers and no wasted water to keep it green.”
That means no watering schedules in July, and no patchy brown spots in March. You get a green lawn year-round.
Have You Ever Taken A Look At A Synthetic Lawn?
Synthetic lawns aren’t a shortcut, but a long-term investment in your landscape. From sustainability to year-round beauty, the technology behind today’s turf makes it a strong option for Boise homeowners who want a green yard without the hassle.
